At the spring edition of Florall, which took place on March 5 at Waregem Expo, 67 producers and 13 supply and export companies presented their spring offerings. This offer consists of a fairly complete range of green and flowering houseplants, in addition to all kinds of visually attractive plants with applications in the garden, on the terrace or in the living room. The exhibitors were satisfied with the interest shown by visitors from home and abroad.
Florall awards
During this edition a professional jury assessed 12 new cultivars and 4 sales or marketing concepts.
The new varieties were assessed for climate and future resistance, exceptional character, added value within the existing range, visual appeal and overall impression. The gold was awarded to Pyracantha coccinea 'Orange Star', an entry from the Dutch trade fair GrootGroenPlus, with which Florall collaborates. The silver went to Carpinus betulus 'Frank Lagaert', which the jury called a native Flemish bonsai. Finally, bronze went to Distylium 'Coppertone', a medium-high and very healthy evergreen shrub.
Among the new concepts the gold went to First Editions®, a series of 75 varieties that are sold under the same concept when they are at their best. Silver went to a banner that highlights the qualities of the ornamental grass Carex and that can be attached to the sales table. Bronze was for 'Plant of the future', which provides plant information through signs, labels and a supporting website.
The audience award went to Agapanthus africanus 'White Willy'. The visitors were allowed to judge which new variety would appeal to them most, and this richly flowering Agapanthus stole the most of the visiting hearts.
The autumn edition of Florall is scheduled for August 20, 2024. It will be a special edition celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of the professional trade fair.

The varieties are offered when they are visually attractive. In this way the offer in the store is automatically renewed. The point of sale material is also visually attractive.

Stevens developed a banner that can be attached to the sales table and that highlights the qualities of Carex. The jury believes that the banner presents the characteristics and advantages of the plant in a readable and understandable way. The presentation at the fair was excellent.
Bronze ‘Plant of the Future’

Lagerstroemia is ready for climate change and is also a perfect bee plant. This concept ensures that both consumers and traders become even better acquainted with these qualities. An attractive sign with QR code is attached to the CC cart, in which the plants are presented in the garden center. Gold: Pyracantha coccinea ‘Orange Star’

The thornlessness is a novelty within the range. The jury also finds the evergreen leaves and the orange berries, which remain on the plant during the winter, an added value. The Pyracantha is drought resistant, the flowers are interesting for bees and the fruits attract birds. Pyracantha entered the competition via GrootGroenPlus. Silver: Carpinus betulus ‘Frank Lagaert’

This Carpinus betulus, which was propagated at the nursery of David Bömer (NL), is notable for its compact growth habit and fine leaves. The jury sees many possibilities for the terrace and for use as a solitary plant in a city garden. “It is a native bonsai, a new use of what was always a hedge plant.” This cultivar is a strong newcomer within the range of climate trees. It is launched in honour of Frank Lagaert for his efforts at the PCS (Ornamental Research Centre) in the search for a wide range of trees suitable for the climate. Bronze: Distylium ‘Coppertone’

Distylium 'Coppertone' has coppery-red new foliage that matures to a cool blue-green. This evergreen shrub is disease resistant and adaptable and is a great choice for mid-size plantings. The jury emphasized the evergreen character and the possibility for use as a ground cover.

This beautiful white, richly flowering and evergreen Agapanthus has been selected for its beautiful full white flowers, but also for the number of flowers. ‘White Willy’ just keeps on blooming. This cultivar keeps on blooming in the greenhouse during the winter.
